“I have political roots; I am an expert in the field of civic education programmes. Egypt is becoming more conservative. I believe in change: we need a culture that will support our rights as human beings — with values of tolerance and non-violence. This change is only possible through political discourse. We have to build new awareness everywhere: in schools, in mosques, at home. For this reason my focus is on civil society.
I try to improve awareness through the process of dialogue. I am the coordinator of the interfaith dialogue
conferences. We meet on a monthly basis: teachers, religious leaders, and people from NGOs and from the media.
We share problems and discuss topics like citizenship. We became a group of friends - that is of course the ultimate goal. People in Europe should change their stereotyped views of Arabs. Westerners should not come as tourists only: we have complicated problems; they should come to meet us, as equals. How do we make contact with people like you?
