“I am Egyptian. I am a physician; I specialized in gastroenterology and studied tropical Medicine.
When I was thirty I was director of a hospital with 50,000 patients and 75 beds. I was ordained to be a priest when I was 48 years old and I became a bishop two years later, in the year 2000. Since then I am too busy to be a doctor, though I still perform the occasional operation!
The Diocese comprises six countries, including Egypt and Ethiopia. Our programmes now include more than 100,000 beneficiaries, both Christians and Muslims. I am good friends with Sheikh Fawzi, the deputy to the Grand Mufti; we often have dinner together, with our wives. We can talk to each other about everything. We trust each other.”
