“I am from Bethlehem, but I have never seen Palestine. I have Jordanian citizenship but grew up in Kuwait because my father found work there. I am a doctor and I worked for six years in Sudan in a charity clinic.

I have been in Egypt for eight years now. I am the manager of Refuge Egypt; one day per week I practise medicine, then I see the complicated cases in the clinic here.

There is a “Four Freedoms” agreement between Egypt and Sudan: freedom of movement, residence, work and ownership. We deal with refugees, who are not willing to go back for fear of prosecution due to religion, ethnicity, or nationality or for political reasons. They are discriminated against in Southern Sudan and it often isn’t easy here either. Here in the streets the Sudanese are called chocolate. We register the refugees here and during the first two years help them to get on their feet.
